How to Look After Your Skin in the Summer

Summer is finally here and so far, the weather has been on our side. I know it’s still early and that things can change but it’s been a lovely couple of weeks, and I’ve enjoyed spending most of Easy Ways to Get Your Garden Ready For Spring my time in the garden – everything seems so much better when the sun is shining don’t you think?

One of the main problems of spending so much time in the garden is how harsh the sun can be on your skin, this is why it’s important that you look after it and change your skincare routine as the seasons change so that your skin is properly looked after.

If you find that you’re spending more time outside or going on holiday soon my tips below will help keep your skin healthy.

Protect your skin from the sun

One of the (if not the most important) things you need to do is protect your skin when you are out in the sun. You should wear SPF in winter too, but it is imperative that in summer you protect your skin and if you are out for a long time, you keep reapplying this protection. You should avoid the hottest parts of the day if you can. Make sure you wear a hat, wide brimmed if possible and protect your eyes with sunglasses too. You should apply sun cream before going out in the sun and apply a lip balm that contains SPF too, lips are often overlooked but they can end up dry, cracked and even burnt by the sun too.

Correct any blemishes

If your skin has been overexposed to the sun, you may find that you start noticing more blemishes and patches of hyperpigmentation. To stop this from happening and/or to reduce the appearance of blemishes you can apply Skinceuticals Phyto Corrective Gel twice a day to the affected area. The specially formulated gel Calms and soothes skin, gradually and gently clean out pores, and assists in reducing skin redness and cell damage. It also helps to brighten skin and reduce dark spots. As it contains hyaluronic acid it will also hydrate skin and help it to retain moisture.

Moisturise well

You should use moisturiser twice a day and on dry skin that has recently been washed. In the summer you may find that you need to moisturise more or use a more intensive moisturiser as being out in the sun for a long time can leave your skin feeling dry, irritated and looking tired. After you’ve been in the sun, have a shower or a bath and then apply a good moisturiser or after sun lotion. Moisturising can help fight spots too as it helps reduce the amount of oil your skin produces.

Wear little make up

I don’t wear make up very often so I don’t have this problem at all but if you do wear make up you should try to wear as little as possible in the summer. Make sure any foundation you wear has a SPF included within it to help protect your face from harmful rays. A light application will make your skin glow and allow your skin to breathe. Use a setting spray to ensure that it doesn’t run or sweat off in the heat. If you don’t wear makeup always ensure that you wear sun cream and keep applying it when needed.
