Easy Ways to Get Your Garden Ready For Spring
Now is the time you need to start thinking about getting your garden ready for spring. If you’re anything like me you’ve probably left it alone for the last few months as it’s so cold and miserable, to be fair you’ve probably got a few more months before you need to do anything drastic out there but that doesn’t mean you can’t plan ahead and a make a list of all the things you might need or want to get sorted once the finer weather does appear. Some things you might consider might include:
Sorting any repairs
There are a few repairs that may have to wait until there is less chance of rain but that doesn’t mean that you can’t get prepped ready for them. It’s a good idea to have a quick walk around your garden and take note of any repairs that need to be done. We’ve had lots of wind in the last three weeks and need at least three fence panels replaced. We have said that although this is a job that needs to be done sooner rather than later it can wait a little bit longer until the better weather arrives.
You may notice things like broken fencing that needs replacing or a freshening up with a lick of paint or perhaps your driveway isn’t as fresh looking as it once was. You should make a list of all the tools and materials you will need in order to complete the repairs. If you have a small budget for garden maintenance, you might find it better to buy some of these items now or over the next few months so that you can complete the work when the weather is good enough to do so but not worry about the cost all at once.
Tree and tree care
Spring is a great time to sort out any tree related issues in your garden. Perhaps you have a tree or two that needs pruning, or a damaged tree that needs felling. Maybe you have had a tree fall and the stump needs removing. If this is the case or you have another tree issue that you need sorting use a site like Mylocaltoolbox.co.uk to find tree surgeons near you.
Thinking about adding new plants
Spring is a busy time of year for many in the garden. It is the time of year when all the plants that we love are ready to be planted. Start thinking about the types of plants or vegetables you would like to include in your garden this year and then make a plan as to when to get started. Don’t plant anything to early though as there is still a chance of frost right up until April and you don’t want all your hard work going to waste before it’s even had a chance to grow. If your lawn is in need of some tlc, now is the time to give it what it needs. It may need new grass seed sowing in the coming months, scarifying to get rid of any moss or a good cut in the coming weeks.
Another thing to consider is not clearing away all the dead leaves, flowers or cutting your grass too soon. As tempting as this is not only can it damage your lawn, trees and flowers many insects use this as their home during the colder months. In spring bees come out of hibernation too and start collecting their first pollen of the year. As tempting as it is to dig up those first weeds why not leave them for a couple of weeks so the bees can get the goodness that they desperately need.
Thinking about your patio area
I don’t know about you but in the summer months, we spend more time outdoors than in. We eat most of our meals outside and often enjoy a drink or two when the evenings are warmer. Having a comfortable place to sit is essential. If you don’t already have a patio area now is the time to put your plans onto paper and think about putting them into action. Will you have a patio or decking? How much seating do you need, will a metal 2 seater bistro set be the perfect set for you or will you need something bigger? Is there a shaded area available? And do you need space for a heater in the evenings?
These are just three areas you could think about when updating your garden ready for the spring, do have anything else on your to do list? If so, I’d love to hear about them in the comments.
