What You Need To Have A Great Summer Party

Last month we celebrate our 4th wedding anniversary. As we got married in New York we did not have a big party with our family and friends. This was always the plan as neither of us likes to be the centre of attention and shy away from things like that in general. However, we did say that we would have an informal party for everyone to get together for our first anniversary, but covid and lockdowns had other plans and our party could not take place.

Fast forward 3 years and we still haven’t arranged our party however we have said that we will arrange a family barbecue for our close family and friends in the coming weeks. We still haven’t really got back to going to family events due to work commitments and if I’m honest my anxiety has got a lot worse and keeps me away even though I really want to go to family gatherings. So we had said that this party will be a celebration of all the events that we have all missed – we have missed other family members’ weddings, birthdays, christenings, a funeral and a wake recently. We are a huge family and that in itself is scary but it will be nice to see everyone under circumstances that are of my own making and relaxed.

If like us, you are planning a summer garden party here are a few things you might want to consider to help make your day a memorable one.

Start with a Theme

A theme isn’t essential, but it can tie everything together nicely. Think tropical, garden tea party, or festival vibes. Themes make it easier to plan decorations, food, and music. If you’re going bigger, you might even want to look into simple event production tips to help coordinate lighting, layout, and flow – especially useful if you’re hiring a venue or bringing in entertainment.

Decorations

Nothing says a party more than balloons, posters, streamers, and banners. If you are partying on a budget or pushed for time you can make your own banners and decorations. If you are planning a summer-themed party – think beach, bright colours, palm trees etc why not make your decorations complement the theme. By using summer fonts, they will all add to the occasion. Why not send your own invites, if you’ve tables for people to sit at add name cards.

The great thing about designing your own banners invites etc is that you don’t need to use specialised or expensive software. You can use sites like Canva, PicMonkey and piZap to design and make anything you like for your themed party. Having a little knowledge of creating a collage would help but is not essential as there is help on each of the websites. My favourite summer font is the Beach Sunshine textured font. It’s fun and would be perfect for a beach-themed summer party. If you have a sandpit dig out the deckchairs, bucket and spade and flip flops and encourage your guests to pretend that they’re on the beach too.

Playful text reads "beach sunshine" in a curly script font with decorative swashes, and "a script bouncy font" below. The background features sunglasses, palm leaves, flowers, and summer party-themed items.

When choosing a font you should make sure that it is easy to read and stands out. If you are making a banner for your party you want it to be the first thing that people see when they enter the garden. If you are using colours other than black make sure that they aren’t too light if going on a light background and try not to make them too in your face and clash with other decorations.

A person with rings and a tattoo uses a brush pen to mix blue and purple watercolour paint on a ceramic palette, preparing vibrant art for a summer party, with a watercolour set and paper on a white table nearby.

If you are planning a small get together and have your own cutting/printing machine why not personalise t-shirts, drinking glasses and water bottles so that everyone has something to remember the party by.

Designing your own invites, banners and souvenirs will take time so make sure that you leave yourself enough time to make them – the last thing you want is to be stressed when you are meant to be enjoying yourself.

Colourful cards with letters spelling "Happy Birthday" are hung on a wooden wall. Each bright card brings a festive, cheerful vibe—perfect for a summer party celebration.

Food

We all love a good barbecue in the summer, don’t we? But if you are the party host sometimes the fun is taken out of the occasion if you are the one doing all the prep, cooking, and cleaning up. You could hire someone to come and do all this for you. If a barbecue isn’t your thing, why not consider a hog roast or a picnic buffet instead?

A party isn’t complete without desserts and or a cake, is it? You could treat your guests to ice cream, home baked treats or something different like an array of Asian desserts. You could treat them to some delicate mochi ice cream, mango sticky rice or some delicious bubble tea, an innovative fusion of flavours and chewy tapioca pearls that offers both a refreshing beverage and a playful treat.

Entertainment

Normally we have lots of drinks and music playing at our family barbecues and we all love playing games in the garden so that everyone can have a bit of fun before leaving for the night. You could even set up a projector and all enjoy a film together. You could have cinema treats and a few drinks whilst watching your film of choice.

Do you have any summer parties planned before the autumn arrives?
