Saving Money on Big-Ticket Purchases: Getting The Best Deals
Have you ever put off buying something new for your home or replacing something simply because the cost was outside of your budget at that time? You’re not alone. With the cost-of-living crisis squeezing household budgets across the country, more and more people are looking for ways to save money when the time comes to make budget-ticket purchases. Whether this is a new sofa, car, kitchen, or even holiday, there’s a deal for that.
But finding the right deal isn’t always as easy as knowing there’s a deal to be done. So this post is going to take a deeper look at how you can save money on the more expensive purchases you need to make so you can get the best price possible.
Go Preloved
Buying preloved is undoubtedly one of the best ways to save money on the more expensive things in life. From buying used cars to sofas, bedroom furniture and even kitchens, there are always people selling something they no longer need but is too good to throw away.
For example, Rehome kitchens are often from high-end manufacturers, so if you’re in the market for a new kitchen, you might score a deal and get the perfect kitchen that would have otherwise been out of your price range.
Buy Cheap and Upcycle
That’s it basically. If you cannot afford the items you want, then why not create them (disclaimer: not recommended for cars!). From those boring, plain white but practical Ikea units to bed frames you can re-cover or make into a new bed or a coffee table you can sand down and revarnish, there are endless options for upcycling.
Let’s take an antique dresser someone is giving away on Facebook. It might not look pretty, but with a clean removal of paint or varnish, changing hardware, suddenly, you have a completely new item that works perfectly for your home. So if money is the barrier to having nice things, buy cheap items, and you can upcycle to give them to you exactly what you need.
Savvy Shopping
Sometimes it’s not about what you buy but when you buy it and who it comes from. The timing of your purchase can make a difference to the cost if you’re not in urgent need of something. Waiting for Black Friday or Boxing Day sales can mean you get what you want with a huge chunk off the RRP.
Signing up for emails can alert you to deals. Creating a membership can allow you to unlock further offers, and using price tracking tools can notify you to changes or discounts you might not otherwise have been aware of.
On top of this, play retailers at their own game. Take advantage of any price match deals they have running. Now this means you need to find the exact same thing on a like-for-like basis for it to be accepted, but if you get it right, retailers like Currys or John Lewis will often match or beat the prices you intend to make the sale. But why bother if it’s the same price? Sometimes, this means you can get better deals from your preferred retailer, like free delivery or installation offers, or even longer guarantees or better customer service.
