What To Do When Jewellery Gets Damaged

Whilst there may be some pieces of jewellery that are surprisingly durable, there are some that can get damaged fairly easily. From chipping gemstones to broken bracelets and snapped necklace chains, it happens.
What does a person do when jewellery gets damaged? If there are a number of pieces in the jewellery box that need fixing, here are a few suggestions on how to do it.

Don’t panic – take a breath

First and foremost, don’t panic. For some, jewellery can be extremely sentimental and seeing something break can be heartbreaking. Be thankful that the damage was spotted and that the damage wasn’t so severe that the item of jewellery was lost completely.

There will always be worse-case scenarios, but when it comes to jewellery that is still in the possession of the person, it’s not worth panicking about.

Take a deep breath and assess the damage before moving forward with anything. There’s no benefit from panicking and getting stressed out. This won’t solve the problem!

Check the return policy

What’s the returns policy for the item? Every returns process is different and some companies offer longer periods than others when being able to return an item. For example, the James Allen return policy has a standard return of 30 days, meaning if it’s broken within that time frame, then there are opportunities for getting a free fix.

If it’s gone beyond its return period or warranty, then it’s good to use the following steps next.

Consider claiming on any insurance you have

When it comes to claiming on insurance, it should only be done in the case where the damage is irreparable or if the jewellery is lost completely. For some insurance policies, everything is covered and for others, it won’t be covered.

Consider making a claim on insurance if the jewellery is covered and for future safety, make sure that all of the jewellery owned, is covered by some form of insurance policy. All future jewellery purchases should be incorporated into any existing policies so that everything is kept in one place.

Take it to a specialist

If the warranty period has ended and the jewellers that the item came from, can’t do anything, then a specialist is the best bet. A specialist for jewellery damage and repairing said damage is a great way of getting the work done properly.

There are plenty of jewellery specialists out there, who will hopefully have the right jewellery tools to hand and depending on the item, the cost of the repair will likely vary. Some repair work may need the replacement of certain gemstones or diamonds, so the cost can go up by a fair amount.

Jewellery can be fixed and replaced – the memories are still there

For those who may be worried about the piece of jewellery not being the same as it was, the memories will remain. With a lot of jewellery, it serves as a reminder of the memories we cherish and hold dear. Even if it is a replacement of the one that was owned before, it still holds the same value.
