What Are The Pros and Cons of Epoxy Flooring?

What is epoxy flooring?

Epoxy flooring is a type of synthetic resin that is laid on top of another form of flooring such as concrete. It is used for both protection and decoration. Epoxy is a two-part compound created by combining resin and hardener.

Where can it be used?

It’s easy to see why epoxy resin flooring in the UK is a popular choice for both commercial and residential applications. It is a popular flooring choice in kitchens, hospitals, restaurants and factories to name but a few.

Although mainly used in commercial settings it is also becoming more popular in residential properties too. The flooring is perfect for hallways, kitchens, garages and basements. It’s easy to clean, hardwearing and will last for a long time so long as it is installed correctly and maintained.

Like all types of flooring epoxy resin has both pros and cons. Some of these are mentioned below.

The pros

  • It can cover large areas of flooring – It’s easy to see why epoxy is used in factories and hospitals. These are big spaces that require a good, safe floor covering.
  • It’s hygienic and easy to keep clean – Epoxy flooring once set can be cleaned with a brush or a vacuum cleaner and/or a mop.
  • It’s long lasting – so long as the flooring is installed properly and well maintained it should last for between 10 and 20 years depending on what it is used for and any general wear and tear.
  • It’s damage resistant – Unlike other flooring types, epoxy won’t crack, peel, or erode. Once cured epoxy is moisture resistant and able to withstand heavy weight.
  • It’s good value for money – Although the outlay may be higher than other flooring types it should longer meaning in the long run it is cheaper. Once you have epoxy flooring it is also cheaper to have it renewed as a new layer can be added over the top as and when required.
  • It looks good – you can choose from many different finishes – marble, granite, metallic or and pretty much any colour you’d like can be incorporated into the floor covering.

The cons

  • It smells when being laid – epoxy gives off an unpleasant smell when wet. It is important that it is installed by professionals and ppe such as masks, overalls, gloves and safety goggles are worn when it is being laid as the fumes can be toxic.
  • It can be time consuming – It can take several days for the flooring to cure completely, depending on the type of epoxy and the size of the floor that needs covering. However, if the epoxy is being applied to a smaller area such as a garage or kitchen it could take only 24 hours to cure.
  • It isn’t easy to remove – If you do decide that you want to remove the flooring it isn’t easy to remove, and you may find it easier to just cover it rather than have it removed or have the existing flooring resurfaced.
