Staying organised when running your home business
Running a home business at the same time as taking care of your family is not easy. To some extent, you can choose when you work. But some things need to be taken care of and done on time. For example, you cannot afford to be late with your tax return or fail to deliver a piece of work you have been contracted to do. You need to make good use of the tools that are available so that you can stay organised and get everything done on time. Here are a few tools and approaches you could use to make running your business easier.
Accounting and invoicing software
Keeping good accounts is an onerous task, but it is not one that you can avoid. You need to be able to file an accurate tax return and identify which of the products and services you provide are profitable. Plus, of course, you also want to ensure that you get paid on time. It is also possible to sign up for a version of the software that makes it easy to track your expenses and take care of other important accounting tasks.
Schedule everything
Most of us keep to-do lists and a calendar. This can work well, especially if you more or less do the same things each month. You fall into a pattern and have a good idea of how long each task will take you. If, however, you find that you are regularly missing targets or chasing your tail you might need to use some sort of organisational software – there are so many options online, do your research to find what would be best suited to your businesses, from task timers to planners.
Create a separate working space for yourself
Try to create somewhere quiet for you to work. If you do not have the space for a separate office, set up one corner of your bedroom, or another room as a dedicated workspace. You will be surprised by how much of a difference this makes to your concentration and productivity. Build-in some flexibility
As mentioned above, you do need to set a schedule and stick to it. But you also have to be realistic. Occasionally, things are not going to go to plan. If all goes well and you do get everything done, use the spare time you have built into your schedule to surprise the children and take them for a treat. Or run a bath and relax for an hour.
Staying organized takes discipline, but it is worth the effort. When you spend less time trying to catch up, you will feel far less stressed.
A large pinboard above you computer screen (if possible) helps, along with a notepad next to your mouse. I am lucky enough to have an old wooden Tambour that has 9 shallow drawers, which is very handy for paperwork!
