Setting Up Your Own Small Business At Home

The best home based businesses are the ones that are started because you are fully passionate about the work and interested in the process involved. And I don't mean those work-at-home pyramid schemes or MLM's that might be a scam or the one a friend is recruiting for on social media.

Working from home can create that flexibility in how you spend your time and make your money, giving you freedom to work the hours you want, to suit your needs and family life. But it isn't a quick process and it doesn't guarantee financial success.

Like for myself, it requires a long-term commitment and a clear understanding of the work involved. I have been running my website for nearly 8 years and it has taken so much time, energy and a lot of cost to make it a success in the long term.

To create a home-based business with a solid foundation and earning potential, you'll need to invest time and resources into identifying the right business for you and creating a plan. Here are just a couple of tips to help you when setting up your own small business at home.

Register Your Business
Most businesses register as a sole trader, limited company or partnership. Whilst you are there, check if you need licences or permits, for example to play music, sell food or to trade in the street, or even insurance for certain businesses. And make sure you're compliant with things such as advertising online (check out ASA or CAP for more information about this) and that you are following GDPR practices at all times.

Find The Space For Your Business
See if you can sort the space in your house before you get the movers in. You never know, you could easily convert the loft, or add an shed to your garden, fitting in electricity so you can use it for your business at home. Make sure this is one of the first things you think about. Craft businesses can take up a hell of a lot of space, and food ones might mean upgrading your area to comply with regs. I'm lucky that most of my business is done online so I don't really need much space. For items I am sent though, I have a separate full length cupboard when everything is stored until I start working on it.

Get Online
Having an online presence is so important nowadays. What's more, you can take payments online using https://www.northamericanbancard.com/products/ecommerce to help you increase your online sales and overall profits. Getting your business a social media presence is probably one of the most important things though. It makes you stand out. It means you can advertise to a whole new range of people, and gets your product seen by hundreds, if not thousands, of people.

Believe In Yourself
Self belief is such an important thing when it comes to a new venture, and anything in life for that matter. If you know you business is a good one, is something that you want to do, enjoy and can grow with, then keep at it. Order a few bottles of bubbly from NakedWinery.com to enjoy when you get your first sale, make your first bit of profit, or when you get your first positive review.

It's all about doing what is right for you. And if you have an idea for a business that you can do at home, then why not. I did it, and it's the best thing I ever did.

  2. I worked all my life as a self-employed draughtsman. Iy is important to set up a home office/workspace where you can shut yourself off from everything. I have used the box room in the houses I have lived in!
