Two young children, a boy in a yellow shirt and a girl in a white dress, stand on a rocky path by the sea. The boy points towards the water and cliffs, sharing curiosity—an early lesson in how to raise a well-mannered child.

How to Raise a Well-Mannered Child

A well behaved child gets us all through life a lot easier, and it ensures you can build a lasting relationship with your child over time. The changes in behaviour often occur due to the environment they’re in at home. Their role models live at home, so they will be likely to follow your directions all of the time in these scenarios.

But thankfully there are ways to help our children grow up to be well-mannered and respectable individuals, not just from the advice of your local nursery school in London. There are also ways we can help our children at home when we’re out and about and throughout all of life’s many encounters. Here are some top tips to consider.

Treat your child with kindness and respect

Being respectful comes a lot more naturally if your child is also treated with the same care. This can be the smallest acts of kindness in front of your child, to the more memorable moments in your child’s life. Make them feel involved in your child’s activities and give your child the confidence that they are doing well; they would want to reciprocate that energy in all walks of life thereafter.

Examples of being kind and respectful include letting your child make the right decisions, helping your child with managing a problem or cheering them on at the sports day, all help your child feel like they are always respected.

Teach your child the right ways to talk to others

Beyond the usual “pleases” and “thank yous”, we should also be teaching our children to offer help when they see an opportunity, give someone a hand if someone needs it, and lots of other examples. Encourage your child to pick up other acts of kindness like holding the door open for somebody or if they see someone about to fall look and see if they could help them up. Those moments are about being courteous and looking out for one another in everyday life.

Point out bad behaviour

Children shouldn’t be behaving badly but it will happen from time to time. It does mean that you should be pointing it out to your child when it happens as they can’t continue this behaviour. This is a good time to explain why good behaviour is important for children and how it can improve their communication, understanding of social cues and more. It also sets a good example for children when they are in nursery school – it can be problematic if your child continually disturbs a classroom.
