Even when we’re over halfway through summer, there are still plenty of opportunities to get the most out of it before it fades into autumn. If you have children, you will want to keep them busy and entertained through the holidays.
Of course, the British summertime is infamous for being somewhat unpredictable. With this in mind, here are some ways to take full advantage of the sunny days and stay busy through the rest.
Host a Garden Party or BBQ
The classic way to take full advantage of a sunny weekend or bank holiday is to start up the grill and start barbecuing. You can also host a garden party or picnic in your garden. This is a wonderful way to spend time with friends and family, without having to travel too far.
Before you can host anything in your garden, you will have to make it appropriate for guests. First, tidy up any garden areas that need work. If you’re a procrastinator, the deadline of an upcoming garden party might be just the boost you need to get the work out of the way.
You also need to make sure that your garden furniture is fit for purpose. If it hasn’t been used in a while, clean it up and check that it’s in good condition. Nobody wants an outdoor chair collapsing on them while they’re trying to eat a burger. Invest in garden awnings or a parasol to provide a shady spot in your garden.
Finally, you can start planning for the party itself. While the food and drink matter, the most important task is to make sure everyone has a good time. With the right company and attitude, it should go without a hitch!
Hiking and Cycling
Depending on your speed, your family might benefit from a walk or a bike ride. It’s an inexpensive way to get outside, enjoy some nice views, and even get some exercise.
You do have to bear the weather and your family’s fitness level in mind, however. While a hot, sunny day is perfect for relaxing in the garden or the beach, it’s not so great for walking or cycling.
Stick to the usual safety advice. Keep your devices charged and loaded with a map. Bring plenty of water with you and make sure everyone has sunscreen. Otherwise, choose a more overcast or cooler day.
If you really take to one of these things then it might be worth investing in the right equipment, not only for the rest of this summer but also for the next one. For example, you could look into the best electric mountain bike or the best hiking shoes that you can afford.
Explore Towns and Villages
Another great option that can suit any weather is to explore any nearby towns and villages. No matter where you live, you can take a day trip to local attractions and places to visit. For example, there are plenty of free museums in Yorkshire ranging from the Royal Armories Museum in Leeds to the Hull and East Riding Museum in Hull, where you can explore an Iron Age Village.
Even if your family isn’t interested in history, you can have a nice time exploring shops, parks, and whatever else takes your fancy. One of the great things about Britain is that there’s always something nearby to explore, you just have to do some research and plan your day out.
