What Can You Do To Improve Your Memory

Some people have amazing memories others do not and as we get older sometimes no matter how great our memory once was it can still be lost. Don’t despair though there are a few things that you can do to help keep your brain working well. These include…

  • Being physical – If you partake in regular exercise it can help lift your mood and improve your muscle memories (subconscious memories). Not only that but moving often also improves blood flow and this includes the blood flowing to your brain.
  • Eating healthily – We all know that we should be eating 5 portions of fruits and vegetables to maintain a healthy balanced diet but to keep your brain healthy you should also ensure that you eat oily fish, nuts, berries and eggs regularly.
  • Having a good sleep routine – It’s important that you try to have a good sleep routine. If you struggle to sleep or only get a couple of hours of sleep each night your brain may struggle to focus on the tasks you need to complete. Try reading or using mindfulness before sleeping at night to relax your brain.
  • Being mentally active – Jigsaw puzzles, crosswords, sudoku or something similar are all great things to make your brain work. Make sure you pick puzzles that aren’t too easy or too hard, you want your brain to think about the puzzle in hand but you don’t want to lose interest if you complete it quickly or give up because it’s too taxing.
  • Socialising regularly – Getting out and about to see your loved ones is a great way to keep your brain active.
  • Being organised – I always have a notebook and a list close by to keep all my important dates and tasks written down. If you can’t remember things very well writing them down will help you to remember them.
  • Learning a new skill – Learning a new skill will help your brain retain memories and new information especially if you practice them regularly. Why not learn to play an instrument, a craft or even a new language.

Learning languages can help the brain improve concentration and aid memory, as explained in this infographic by Babbel world’s first language learning app.
