Colourful Dutch canal houses reflected in water, with several bicycles parked along a bridge railing under a clear blue sky—a classic scene and one of the must-see things to do in Amsterdam.

Things To See and Do In Amsterdam

What comes to mind when you think of Amsterdam? For me it’s the museums, the tulips, the canals and the friendly people. It was the first place that me and my husband visited and we had a lovely time.

If you are thinking of travelling to Amsterdam soon and planning on visiting a number of the many attractions the city has to offer then consider purchasing a Go Amsterdam Pass before you go as this will save you money in the long run. This all-inclusive multi-attraction pass is valid for 1, 2, 3, or 5 days and covers your admission to over 20 of Amsterdam’s most popular attractions. You will be able to go on river cruises, visit famous gardens, ancient castles and much more.

If you’ve been to Amsterdam before you will know that the city is rich in culture and history but if you’ve never been before I have a few suggestions for places you should try to visit. Even if you’ve been before there are still plenty of attractions to visit including:

Anne Franks House

A must visit for those who have an interest in the cities history. Anne Frank’s House is one of the most popular tourist attractions. This museum contains the building where Anne’s family hid from the Nazis in World War II and where her diaries were found. If you are planning to visit I would recommend getting here early as queues soon build up and you can be waiting in line a long time.

A Canal Tour

You will be spoilt for choice when it comes to going on a boat trip in Amsterdam. Many trips range from a 30 minute tour to a couple of hours. You can choose a short trip or one that includes a meal and a leisurely cruise along the famous canals. There are booze cruises or leisurely trips so make sure you choose the right trip for you.

Colourful tulips with purple, pink, and yellow petals fill the foreground, while blurred canal houses with gabled roofs and fairy lights hint at the charming atmosphere and things to do in Amsterdam.

Keukenhof

If you are visiting Amsterdam between March and May then a trip to Keukenhof is a must. With over 7 million flowering bulbs and sculptures from more than 25 artists visitors are sure to be in for a treat. The park offers boat rides, cycle hire and more for visitors of all ages.

Muiderslot Castle

Situated just 15km from Amsterdam in Muiden, Muiderslot Castle is the perfect attraction for visitors young and old. The castle is one of The Netherlands most famous landmarks and is home to historic relics and artefacts from 17th century and middle ages.

See The Windmills

The Netherlands is famous for it’s many windmills. Although you wont see these in Amsterdam you can book a trip that will take you on a tour of some of the best windmills they country has to offer. The trips can take half a day or more so I’d recommend you only book a trip if you are staying for a few days.

Above I have mentioned just a few of the places to visit in Amsterdam, there were too many to mention them all but I’m sure that when you visit Amsterdam, you will have an amazing trip, whether it’s your first trip or your 100th. Have you been before or planning to go for the first time? If you’ve some suggestions for places to visit I’d love to hear about them or your plans in the comments below.
