Easy Summer Plants for Busy Families: Low Maintenance Garden Ideas That Actually Work

When it comes to getting your garden ready for summer, one of the biggest questions is what to actually plant. It’s all well and good wanting a colourful, bright space, but if you’re anything like me, you don’t want something that needs constant attention.

The good news is there are plenty of plants that look great without needing loads of effort. Perfect for busy families, unpredictable weather and those of us who just want something that works without too much fuss.

If you’ve already started refreshing your outdoor space, you might want to read my guide on how to get your garden ready for summer for even more ideas.

Start With the Basics

Before choosing plants, think about your space. Is it sunny most of the day or quite shaded? Do you want pots, hanging baskets or something in the ground? We have a mixture of pots and planted in the ground in our gardens and I love the mix that we have.

Keeping things simple from the start makes everything easier to manage. Pots and containers are a great option because they’re easy to move around and don’t require digging up your garden.

They’re also perfect if you like to change things up each year.

Go for Easy Wins With Bedding Plants

If you want quick colour with minimal effort, bedding plants are the way to go. They’re affordable, easy to find and instantly brighten up your garden.

Petunias and pansies are always a favourite. They grow quickly, last all summer and come in loads of colours. Geraniums are another great choice and are known for being quite hardy, even if the weather isn’t perfect.

Marigolds are ideal if you want something cheerful and bright. They’re easy to care for and work well in both pots and borders.

These are the kind of plants you can grow at home, pick up at your local garden centre or supermarket if they have a garden section, plant out and enjoy without worrying too much.

Hanging Baskets for Instant Impact

If you’re short on space or just want something that looks good straight away, hanging baskets are a brilliant option.

You can either buy them ready-made or create your own. Filling them with trailing plants like lobelia or trailing petunias gives that full, overflowing look that feels very “summer garden”. They’re perfect for adding colour near seating areas, doors or fences.

Perennials That Come Back Year After Year

If you want something more long-term, perennials are worth considering. These plants come back every year, which means less work in the future.

Lavender is a great choice. It smells lovely, attracts bees and doesn’t need much attention once established. Hostas work well in shaded areas and add a nice bit of greenery.

Coneflowers and hardy geraniums are also good options if you want something colourful that doesn’t need constant care. We don’t have in our garden yet but they are on my list to be added this year.

The great thing about perennial is that you only need to plant them once and they will be enjoyed for years.

Don’t Forget Herbs

Herbs are one of the easiest things you can grow, and they’re actually useful too.

Mint is almost impossible to kill, which makes it perfect for beginners. Basil, chives and rosemary are also easy to grow and can be used in everyday cooking.

You can keep them in small pots near the kitchen door so they’re easy to grab when you need them. It’s a simple way to make your garden feel more practical as well as pretty.

Keep Maintenance Realistic

The key to a successful garden isn’t having loads of plants. It’s having the right ones for your lifestyle. If like us you have a garden that grows weeds like there’s no tomorrow then make sure you are on top of clearing those as and when you can – there is no point having a beautiful garden if it’s full of weeds.

Stick to a few easy options rather than trying to do everything at once. Water them regularly, remove any dead flowers when you can and just keep things ticking along. It doesn’t have to be perfect. A garden that’s enjoyed is far better than one that feels like a chore.

Make It Work for Your Family

If you’ve got kids, think about how your planting choices fit into your space. Avoid anything too delicate in high-traffic areas and keep things practical.

Raised pots or containers can help protect plants while still adding colour.

You could even get the kids involved by letting them choose a few plants of their own. It makes the garden feel like a shared space rather than just another job to do.
