How Can PE Help My Child With Their Mental Health

A group of young children in colourful jackets walk in a line, stepping over a rope ladder during PE on green grass at an outdoor sports field, promoting physical activity and mental health on a sunny day.
PE is an important aspect of the school curriculum. Children love to take part in a variety of different sporting activities, being part of a team and representing their houses at school events. Of course, there are some obvious physical health benefits to PE, but it is also beneficial to mental health, as explored below by a private school in New York.

Research has shown that exercise can reduce anxiety by boosting endorphins. Young people are often a lot more anxious and stressed than adults might think. They are trying to navigate the frightening world of friendships and romantic relationships problems, puberty, exams and all of the important decisions they need to make about their future. With that in mind, the anti-anxiety treatment of regular physical activity will go a long way to enhance their mental well-being.
For students who have ADHD, PE is an effective way to reduce some of the symptoms because it boosts levels of dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin, all of which have an impact on focus and attention. As such, physical activity can improve concentration, memory and general mood and essentially work in a similar way to ADHD medications. Of course, better concentration and sharpness in class is beneficial for any student, not just those with ADHD.
Taking part in sports teaches children the importance of perseverance. At times they might feel like giving up, but the ability to overcome adversity is a skill that they can carry through all aspects of their lives.
Regular physical activity allows us to invest in our minds and bodies, which is why it’s so important in schools. It allows children to feel stronger and when they meet even the smallest of goals, they feel a sense of achievement. As a result, it is likely the PE will help improve the overall self-esteem of the students.
