In spring, it’s common to clean the home. I mean, nothing feels quite as satisfying as coming home to a clean house. And homes can go through a lot of wear and tear, especially after a busy winter, so it’s a good idea to do a deep dive and scrub those spaces that might be neglected during the daily cleaning routine.
When it comes to cleaning your house, we all try to do the minimum we can get away with, most of the time. But when it comes to doing a deep clean, things can become a bit of a pain. If you don’t want to use too many cleaning products, and go for mild ways of cleaning, then there are a few tips that cleaning companies use.
Declutter
The golden rule when it comes to decluttering is that if you haven’t used it in the past year then it is likely that you never will. Although, there are a few exceptions to this such as seasonal clothing and items you only require once in a while. Decluttering is the ideal way to actually see your house as it is before you start cleaning. And if you don’t need something, consider donating to charity, passing it on to a friend or dropping it off at a recycling centre. Take a ruthless stance and you’ll be shocked to realise just how much space is being taken up in your home unnecessarily.
Clean Room-By-Room
Like a house cleaning company, they would approach your home room by room. This is the most effective way to really deep clean your home as there’s no back and forth, and it makes it easier to see what does and doesn’t need doing. Focus initially on the parts of your home that have been neglected all winter long.
Cleaning With Baking Soda
Baking soda is such a versatile product and can be used in many instances. In fact, house cleaning company TSD Cleaning Services say that it can help in removing rust stains from countertops or around pipes, removing oil stains, and is great for neutralising odours too.
Cleaning Stainless Steel
Did you know that the best way to clean stainless steel, is to use vinegar and oil, and other household essentials? No, neither did I, until I came across a guide on how to clean stainless steel and have used it ever since. If you own any stainless steel appliances, then you know that they are hardly ever actually stainless. Fingerprints and water stains tend to decorate the surfaces of dishwashers, refrigerators and ovens. Harsh chemicals can ruin stainless steel and so it’s best to use gentle products on these areas. You can use white vinegar to remove grime from appliances, rubbing in the direction of the grain, and then buss up using olive oil to give it a fresh, shiny polish.
Use Lemons
You’ve probably read a lot about using lemon for cleaning and there are many reasons why cleaning companies use it when cleaning your house. The acid in lemons has both antibacterial and antiseptic properties, while the oils in the rind can also help to clean and shine. And don’t forget about the lovely citrus scent too.
- Mix a cup of water with the juice of a lemon, microwaving for 3 minutes to loosen off any grime, and give the microwave a nice scent.
- Descale a kettle with the juice of a lemon and around 500ml of water. Let it sit in the kettle for a while before boiling it, emptying the excess, and then washing the kettle out thoroughly for a limescale free kettle.
- Mix the juice of a lemon with salt to give an abrasive cleaner that can be used for cleaning pots and pans, work surfaces and even chopping boards.
Don’t Forget The Little Areas
Wipe down light fixtures, mirrors and windows. Take extra time to carefully clean out corners and hidden spaces around. Remove any grime or dust that has built up by wiping items down with a little vinegar on a damp rag. Skirting boards are also somewhere that needs dusting as well as bannisters, and anything with an edge that can collect dust.
Carpets And Upholstery
Fabrics can be hard to clean as they’ve absorbed a whole worth of dirt, body oil, and germs which will need a deep cleaning to get them ready for another year of wear. With flooring, try to work from one end of the room to the other. Move furniture to one side and focus on the other, so you get the whole floor area of the side to work on. And then move to the opposite side and get that done. Upholstery is the same, work on one thing at a time. Gentle circular motions, making sure to get into every crevice and not overwetting the area. Open the windows to speed up the drying process, which can take a day or more.

I like the idea of throwing stuff out that you haven't used for a year.
Great tips. I would add that rather than using lemon juice, it is much cheaper to buy yourself a tub of citric acid powder. Citric acid is the active ingredient in lemon juice, and buying it as a powder means you pay much less, plus it lasts longer and doesn't need refrigeration. You just mix up a tablespoon of citric acid with water in a spray bottle, and then you're ready to clean.
