Growing Apples with Dobies of Devon

Now our garden is sorted and secure, we are in the process of sprucing it up so it looks lovely when we are sitting outside. For this, we have looked in to plants and flowers that will give us a year-round look.
Over the next few months we’ll slowly be planting in the flowers and plants so that every day of the year, there will be suitable flowers in bloom to make our garden attractive.

A couple of weeks back I was contacted by Dobies of Devon who have been supplying flower and vegetable seeds direct to gardeners since 1880. In addition to seeds, they offer the largest range of young annual plants available by post, plus bulbs, fruit, trees and garden equipment.
They asked if we would like to receive something for our garden to help give it the lift it needed and so off I popped to check their website to see what I could find.

After a look around, and many changes of mind, I settled on something that I knew would look beautiful all year round and that the kids would love too – a Red Sun Dwarf Apple Tree. I picked this fruit tree because the kids love apples and what better way than waking up in the morning and being able to pop into the garden to pick your very own.
The tree arrived a couple of days later and was bigger than I thought it would be. On site, it says that it should be the approximate size on delivery will be 30-40cm but it was actually closer to the 100cm mark.

This tree produces delicious crisp, juicy normal sized fruits produced in early September and the apple variety is Garden Sun Red. We are keeping it potted for now until after the Winter and then will be planting it in the garden so it can have it’s own little space to grow.
As you can imagine, the kids can’t wait for it to bloom although it’s not due to start producing fruit until September-ish, it gives us plenty of time to watch it grow and see how big it eventually gets.
