Going Abroad For The First Time: What You Need To Know

If you’ve never been one for travelling abroad, this year is the time to break the habit. Going abroad is some of the most fun you can have, especially as a family, and it’s good to see what the world has to offer. However, that doesn’t mean it’s totally smooth travelling from here on out!

It can still be a nerve wracking experience, even when you’ve got travel insurance to your name. Which is why we’ve listed below some things to know before booking your first overseas trip; keep them in mind when you’re thinking of a place to book for the whole family.

Make Sure Your Money is Available

It’s a lot easier to spend money abroad these days than it used to be about 10 years ago. However, you should look into your bank’s policy about using cards abroad just to be safe. After all, there may be restrictions on withdrawal amounts, and you may have to pay a fee on anything you take out. Double check just to be safe.

Investigate All the Different Ways to Travel

This isn’t just about whether or not you should fly. It’s also about the way you’ll get around your destination once you’ve arrived. Can you walk it? Is there a good public transport system? Or would it be better to hire a car and make your own way? These are decisions to make long before you set off, and to get a good handle on before you arrive. You need to know where you’re going and how to ensure there’s little to no stress when you’re on the ground.

Keep All Your Documents Together

You can get it all on your phone these days, but it’s good to have physical backups as well. So, plane tickets, the lengthy hotel booking for those Skiing Holidays, and your dinner reservations need to be kept together. Similarly, any required proof of visa, your passports, and your confirmation of vaccines (if needed for the destination), should be kept in the same place. Bundle them all up in a safe folder and keep it firmly shut and in your carry on at all times. If the luggage goes missing, you don’t want them to fly off with it!

Get as Many Bookings as Possible

Booking in advance secures your place right then and there. That means you don’t have to worry about rocking up on the day and expecting to be let in – you’ve already got a pass that’ll let you sail right on through! And if you’re someone who’s prone to worry about this, paying booking deposits and filing the receipts onto your phone will really help to settle your mind. Not to mention the popularity factor; you may not even get a chance to buy a ticket on the door or a seat during the dinner rush otherwise.

If you’ve never been abroad before, let us help you put your mind at ease with some preparation tips like these.
