Festive Films To Watch Over The Christmas Period

A festive collage features five beloved Christmas films for children—Home Alone, Deck the Halls, Miracle on 34th Street, A Christmas Carol, and Jingle All the Way—set on a gold background with "For the Children This Christmas" in cheerful text.

Christmas is my favourite time of the year. I mean, what’s not to love. We get mega food, mega drinks and plenty of fun. Watching the children open presents, eating a big feast with the family, and winding down to watch the Queen’s Speech. It’s such a beautiful time of year.

And then there’s the Christmas movies which are always shown, and loved, at this time of year. I love that Christmas movies are all centred around children and how they make Christmas extra special. Showing the miracle of Christmas, and usually with a bit of comedy thrown in.

Here are my top 5 Christmas movies…

Miracle On 34th Street

My absolute favourite Christmas movie of all time, Miracle on 34th Street is  a remake of the 1947 classic but featuring the amazing Sir Richard Attenborough as Kris Kringle. This film tells the story of a little girl who’s wish is for a full family, including a dad and a baby brother. Kris Kringle is acting as the grotto Santa in the department store managed by her mother, although he actually believes he is the real Santa Claus. Because of this, rival stores dislike him, and try to dis-credit him, leading to a court case where Kris Kringle has to prove that he is the real thing.

Home Alone

I’m sure everyone knows the story of Home Alone. 8 year old Kevin is accidentally left at home with his family hastily rush off on vacation. Kevin then has to defend his family home after 2 burglars try to break in, with hilarious consequences. Planting booby traps, will Kevin manage to protect his home before his parents get back?

Jingle All the Way

Surely having Arnold Schwarzenegger playing the lead character, Howard, in a Christmas movie will make for a fun one, yes? It really does as this story follows how he is determined to get his son the most popular toy for that year, Turbo Man. The only problem, he’s left it too late and they’re all sold out. Soon, Howard finds himself in a rush against time, crowds of other shoppers, and a postman who is also looking for Turbo Man.

Deck The Halls

This family comedy starring Danny DeVito (Buddy Hall) and Matthew Broderick (Steve). Steve believes that no other time of the year can compare to the glory of the Christmas season. Each years he does a bunch of Yuletide traditions that his family can barely tolerate. But Steve’s Christmas festivities are suddenly thrown into jeopardy when Buddy Hall moves in next door. and Steve finds himself going up against his new neighbour.

A Christmas Carol

Probably one of the most memorable Christmas movies is A Christmas Carol which focuses around Ebenezer Scrooge in this version of the Dickens Christmas classic. Scrooge hates the fuss everyone makes during the festive season and lets everyone know so. That is until he is woken on Christmas Eve by the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future. Each of these takes him on a journey to open up his heart and learn the joy of Christmas.

  1. Miracle on 34th Street is my all time favourite but there are many others, too. I frequently forget what to watch so appreciate the reminder.
