The Best Places to Visit on the Yorkshire Coastline

Whitby, North Yorkshire

Yorkshire is known for its vast moorlands, historic towns and charming northern accent. Yorkshire is home to the rugged Heritage Coast of the North York Moors, and a whole host of breathtaking beaches. Spend a weekend visiting the quaint rural villages or basking in the sea air along the coast. Yorkshire is worth taking the time to visit – especially if you like old school horror movies and British history. Here are the best places to see on Yorkshire’s coastline.

Scarborough

Scarborough is famous for its poor weather conditions and stunning beaches. The sandy beaches and stormy weather give Scarborough a cosy and friendly atmosphere. The North Bay is isolated at high tide and is excellent for rock pooling. While the South Bay has a sandy beach and working harbour filled with yachts and pleasure boats.

Robin Hood’s Bay

Robin Hood’s Bay is filled with picturesque fishing cottages and rocky overhanging cliffs. Leave your car at the top of the cliff and experience the famous steep descent into the bay. The cobbled alleyways perfectly frame the quaint cottages and make for an excellent Instagram picture – or hiding spot for 18th century smugglers.

Whitby

Whitby Abbey was the inspiration behind Bram Stoker’s Dracula movie. You can climb 199 steps and experience the creepy atmosphere around the magnificent Abbey. Or, head to Whitby Beach and spend a few days playing in the sand and water. In fact, Whitby Beach has just been awarded a Blue Flag Beach Award as it meets the highest environmental standards for safety and cleanliness. You can take a walk along the West Pier to see all of the colourful beach huts and spot a few donkey rides too.

Bridlington

Bridlington is one of the best beaches in Yorkshire. The beach is a mixture of sand and shingle with fantastic facilities for visitors. You can hire a chalet to relax near the beach and enjoy a seaside staycation. Bridlington Spa has some fantastic views as well as a wonderful set of massages and treatments on offer. Treat yourself to a little luxury on your Yorkshire beach holiday. Or, embrace your inner adventurer and head to Flamborough Cliffs for some breathtaking views of the beach.

Cayton Bay

If you want to spend the day surfing, head to Cayton Bay for some of the best surfing in England. Cayton Bay’s natural geology curates the perfect surfing conditions and a whopping swell. It’s also a dog-friendly beach, so you can bring your pup along for the ride and play in the waves together. Or, if bird watching is more your thing – bring your binoculars to see the wildlife around the bay. Spend your days hiking through the moors and your evenings in the pub with the locals. Visit some of Yorkshire’s best beaches on your next staycation and learn about the towns brimming with history.
