It can be difficult to decide whether or not hiring a private tutor for your child is worth the investment, particularly if you’re strapped for cash as it is. Although no definitive answer can be given, I have teamed up with a sixth form in Cardiff to share five signs that it might be a good option.
1. Your Child is Struggling with the Basics
Unless your child can master the basics of a certain subject, they will certainly struggle with the more challenging requirements and are therefore likely to fall behind. Unfortunately, teachers in traditional schools cannot repeatedly cover the basics and will at some point have to move on, which is where a private tutor might be beneficial.
2. Exams Are Coming Up
If your child has exams coming up, a tutor will be able to help them focus on areas they might be struggling with to maximise their potential and ensure they get the best possible grades. Fortunately, the exam period doesn’t last forever, so your child would only have to work with their tutor on a temporary basis.
3. You’re Struggling to Help
Unless you’re a teacher yourself, or at least work in the education sector, it can be difficult to provide your child with the support they need to excel academically. A private tutor, on the other hand, can do just that. They will know which resources are most useful and will be able to give advice tailored to your child’s requirements.
4. A Sudden Drop in Grades
This is one of the most obvious signs that your child requires some extra support; a sudden and significant drop in grades. First and foremost, you should establish if this is because they are finding the topics hard as opposed to simply not applying themselves or taking their education seriously.
5. Your Child is Suffering from Anxiety
If your child appears to be suffering from anxiety or perhaps wants to avoid school altogether, it could be because they are having a hard time in class. Of course, there could be another problem at play, like a school bully, so be sure to speak to your child’s teachers first to find out why they might be so worried about going to school.
Of course, your child doesn’t necessarily have to be falling behind or showing signs of anxiety for you to justify hiring a private tutor. If finances permit, you could hire a tutor to simply help take your child’s studies to the next level, broaden their learning, and ensure they perform well in school.
