5 Amazing Short UK Summer Breaks

With summer well and truly on its way and the school year coming to a close, now is the time to start planning your family’s summer break.

Unfortunately for families with children, the price of holidaying abroad is astronomical outside of term time, meaning that they are left to make the most of what is on their doorstep. That is no bad thing, however, as Britain is one of the most beautiful countries in the world.

To prove our point, here is our top five locations for a short UK summer break:

Stourport-on-Severn

Stourport-on-Severn is a gorgeous little hidden gem along the River Stout, also featuring the River Severn and Staffordshire and Worcestershire all running through this quaint town just south of Kidderminster.

Don’t let this retreat’s size fool you into thinking that there is little occupy yourselves with as there is an abundance of activities for those young and old. Boat rides, play areas and putting greens are just a sample of what is on offer in Stourport-on-Severn. The children will be sure to want to spend a few hours over the bridge at Treasure Island Amusement Centre.

As this natural haven is located on the fringes of Worcester with gorgeous scenery, the area makes for a popular spot for caravans with various holiday parks nearby.

Edinburgh

Scotland has never been famed for its warm weather, so make the most of all of the sun that the country’s capital has to offer. The historic city boasts an array of landmarks and attractions that visitors can take in at their own leisure, or as part of a tour. 

As you might expect, Edinburgh enjoys a vibrant nightlife with restaurants and bars aplenty where you can grab a taste of what it means to be Scottish. While summer celebrations are nothing compared to the famed Hogmanay event, you can be sure that the party will go on long into the night.

York

Beautiful Yorkshire, you just cannot beat! Fresh air, stunning countryside and, best of all, chips and gravy – it’s no wonder it’s referred to as God’s country!

York is one of the UK’s favourite destinations for a short break. Spending the afternoon walking through the Yorkshire Dales is a great way to forget about busy cities and get back to nature with friends and family.

London

London is the complete polar opposite of York, but makes for an unforgettable experience all the same. England’s capital is packed to the brim with historic sites such as the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace and the dungeons.

If you are setting off for a few days in London, then you are going to want to save up as it is little secret that prices soar inside the Metropolitan bubble. Hotel rooms are not cheap to come by and the cost of attractions will set you back if you do not invest in package deals, which is something we definitely recommend.

Although London is full of busy bodies looking to get from A to B faster than Usain Bolt at the Olympics, there is the calmness that Hyde Park brings. Admittedly, the area can become busy depending on what events are being held, but for the most part Hyde Park is a lovely slice of nature where you can catch your breath.

Lake District

The Lake District is arguably the UK’s premier natural retreat with 912 square miles of greenery making the area as an opportune spot for a family picnic, hiking or cycling. It is little wonder why over 17 million tourists a year visit the national park.

Families with young children should especially look to take an extended break in the Lake District, if not to simply remind the new generation that there is life outside of a computer screen!
