Five Ways To Create Extra Storage In Your Bedroom

To most people, their bedroom is just a place to sleep but to me, my bedroom is my quiet space. It’s where I go to relax, watch TV or read a book when I need a little me time. For this reason, I don’t like it full of clutter or being too untidy.

Bedrooms never seem to have enough space, do they? Well, mine doesn’t anyway. Either that or I have too many clothes, books and other things taking up space in there. There is a lot of clutter but I am going to make steps to reduce this in the coming months so that it will look and feel bigger and continue to be my happy place.

If you’re in the same position, have a small bedroom or just wondering how you can make extra storage space in your bedroom you could consider one or two of the following ideas.

Have a clear out

The first place to start with any room makeover no matter how big or small is to have a good clear-out. It’s amazing how much clutter accumulates especially if you have the mentality of sorting things later or keeping things because you may need them in the future.

Sort things into different piles – to keep, donate, sell and throw away. You’ll be surprised by how much of each you have and anything you no longer need or use can be donated to a charity that can use it or be sold to buy something new for your bedroom.

If you’re planning to replace the bedroom furniture you may decide that you don’t need as much as was in the room before. You may also want to try and find furniture that isn’t as big and chunky as this takes up more space too.

Make the most of your bed space

There is a lot of wasted space under our beds and even if you do put things under there it can still look messy and cluttered. Beds that have hidden storage are a great way of hiding clutter and storing items away safely. If you are looking for a new bed that has useful storage space why not consider a divan bed that has drawers or an ottoman bed that lifts up. Both divan and ottoman beds are perfect to store items that you don’t use often but need to keep – bedding, towels, Christmas decorations or keepsakes are all items that take up lots of space in my bedroom but are hidden away until needed.

Use wall space

If you have lots of empty wall space why not place shelving around the room. You can store books, DVDs and CDs (if you still have them), your perfume collection, photo frames and other little items. They’re not only functional but they’ll look great too.

If you have a TV in your bedroom instead of it sitting on top of a chest of drawers you could have it fixed to a wall instead. This will free up lots of space for you to use for something else.

Although it won’t give you more storage by adding mirrors or painting your walls a lighter colour you will give the elusion of more space and make your room look bigger. Darker rooms often make things look closer together and smaller.

Purchase multi-purpose furniture

If you have a small bedroom but need or want to add lots of furniture this might not be viable. Instead, you could consider looking for furniture that can be used for more than one purpose. This will save you both space and money. If you need a desk to work at and would like a dressing table why not compromise on something that can be used for both. If you look around you could even purchase a desk that has drawers in it so that you can make more use of the space either using it for your make-up, hair drying equipment or your work things.

Think outside the box

We’ve already mentioned buying a bed that can store items that you don’t need or use often but there are other things you can do too. If you don’t have room for lots of furniture consider using a clothes rack instead of a wardrobe. You could use stacking tables instead of beside tables so that when you need the extra space you can pull the additional tables out to use and put them away when not needed.
