A Bit of This and a Bit of That…

Can you believe we are halfway through the summer holidays? It seems to be flying by doesn’t it? In some ways I can’t wait for the start of the school term but in others I’m dreading it.

It’s nice to have the boys at home and I’m especially loving the calmer, quieter mornings. That being said though I can’t wait to get back to my normal daily routine as my exercising and working routines have fallen by the wayside – they always do when the kids are at home so I’m not overly bothered as I know I’ll pick them back up. I’m also excited to see how my eldest son gets on in 6th Form College. He did amazing in his GCSE’s and we are so proud and can’t wait to see where the next chapter takes him.

We’ve been having a lovely time

I said at the start of the summer we had no plans for a holiday this year but next year we are definitely going away. We’ve not had a family holiday in a long time and the last time I went away was to New York in 2019 when we got married. We didn’t want to plan anything this year with how uncertain things have been in the past few months. Although I work from home and could easily adapt to any time of isolation if needed upon our return my husband couldn’t – I know things are changing all the time and even at the point of writing I think we no longer need to isolate but it’s just no a risk we have been willing to take this year. Fingers crossed for normality next year for us all.

We have been spoilt weather wise and I think that has softened the blow of not going on holiday for us. In fact, it has been lovely. We have spent days at the beach, in the garden and with our friends and family. It has been pretty perfect.

I have been wearing what I want

When I was a teenager, I used to be really self-conscious about what I wore. As I’ve got older, I’ve realised that the only person's opinion that matters is my own. I now wear what I like regardless of whether someone else disapproves. That means I’ve been wearing denim shorts, jumpsuits, a lovely shacket on the cooler evenings, loungewear and I even purchased a new little black dress just in case I’m able to get to the races before the season ends. If you’re looking for summer clothes for a holiday or any last minute plans take a look at Femmeluxe as they have clothes for every style and season.

Did you know that on average, a person could use 11,000 single use items in their lifetime to manage their period? Or that One disposable pad takes between 500 and 800 years to biodegrade? I certainly didn’t realise that the figures were so high.

For this reason, I’ve been experimenting with period pants and a menstrual cup. I’ve had my cup for ages and never actually tried it. My friend recently mentioned purchasing one and how it had transformed her time of the month. For me, this has always been a week of feeling out of sorts, bloated and drained. I can’t say I’m 100% sold on the cup just yet (I need a couple of months to get used to it I think) it certainly has made it easier and it’s great if you are conscious about your impact on the environment.

Similarly, period pants from Modibodi are perfect for those who don’t want to or can’t use a cup or who can’t / want to stop using pads and tampons. They recently brought out new colours to their ever-expanding range and I have to say I absolutely love this colour. Who says you can’t wear nice pants on your period?

I've been baking

I love to bake but just recently I haven’t found the time. It’s also been really hot and who wants to be stuck in the kitchen on a hot day? But I’m pleased to say that I was able to spend the last weekend baking much to the delight of my husband and children. I made Chocolate Orange Brownies (recipe to follow shortly) and chocolate covered flapjacks which are a firm favourite in our house.

What have you been up to in the holidays so far?
