How to Host a Socially Distanced Anniversary Celebration

With the new restrictions and lockdowns that are being put in place recently, many people are having to be creative and look at different ways to celebrate their anniversary in 2020. We know that this has been a very tough year for many people and the thought of not being able to celebrate your anniversary how you imagined you would can be very disappointing for many people, however it’s important to remember that it’s only for one year, and hopefully by your next anniversary things will be a different and you can celebrate in style and have an even bigger celebration to make up for it.

The level or tier you have been placed in and what area of the UK you are will affect what restrictions there are on how you can celebrate your anniversary. Some areas that are in total lockdown won’t be able to travel or even go to a restaurant on their anniversary evening which will be very disappointing; however there are ways to still make your evening romantic and something that you can remember for years to come.

Cook together
If you are stuck at home in lockdown then try to look at the positives in the situation and embrace your time at home together and be creative with the ways in which you can celebrate. You could use this opportunity to cook a fancy three course meal together. If there are some recipes that you’ve both wanted to try then this is the perfect opportunity for you to do it. Or alternatively this might be the perfect opportunity for you to take an online cooking class and learn to cook together. Cook up a treat, light a scented candle and enjoy a romantic candlelit dinner.

Re-live your wedding day
Having this time at home is also a great time to re-live your special day together and you can make a day of it. If you had a video made of your wedding day then you can watch it back together and reminisce about the memories. Another nice thing to do is to put on the song that you chose for your first dance and reconnect with your partner and recreate the moment of your first dance.

Surprise your partner with gifts
Although you will be at home for your day, you can still be romantic and surprise your partner with anniversary gifts that they will love. Think creatively when you are choosing the gifts and think about the traditional and modern gifts that are associated with your anniversary year. There are plenty of options when it comes to choosing the perfect gift, and you could even be creative and make something yourself if you want to make something really from the heart.

The main thing to remember when looking for the perfect gift is to choose something that your partner will love. Think about what their interests are and what you can buy to show them that you care. If there is something they’ve been wanting for a while then this may be the perfect opportunity for you to surprise them with it.

Connect with family and friends online
As you won’t be able to be with many of your family and friends on your anniversary you could organise an online call with them to celebrate on a platform such as zoom or facetime. This is a great way to get all your loved ones together in one place, safely. You could all decide before the call to buy the same drinks or get games organised beforehand to make the call interactive and fun. Many of your friends and family will love the opportunity to share in your day, even if it is only online for now. They may also have surprised you with gifts that they have sent to you beforehand, so you could open these on the call so they can see your reaction as you open them. You could also invite them to share their own messages of love for you both too or ask them for a memory or something special about your marriage that you can treasure.

If you want to make an online party with your friends and family fun, you could incorporate music and some fun wedding inspired games. You could even all agree to learn a new tik tok dance that you all take in turns to perform on the night! This will definitely create some talking points and laughter.

Social distanced celebration
If you are able to meet with a small amount of family or friends outside of your home then this could be a great way to have a small, socially distanced celebration with them perhaps in your garden or in a local park. You could each pack up a picnic and arrange to meet up with them, but remember that numbers are usually limited to six, so make sure that you adhere to the current guidelines in your area. You could make it more special by having some music playing too, or even if you’re holding it in your garden, you could decorate the area and make it memorable with balloons or banners.

  1. Very good advice in these difficult times. We had a trip away booked for our wedding anniversary last year and had to cancel it. Not thought of what to do this year yet...

  2. That sounds lovely. It's hard to make things special atm.
