How to choose the right hand sanitizer

We all know how important hand hygiene is – it keeps hand clean by killing any germs, bacteria and viruses that we might have on our hands. Hand sanitizer goes hand-in-hand (quite literally) with hand hygiene. By using hand sanitizer after touching public surfaces or after touching food, you will reduce the risks of getting ill and spreading germs, bacteria and viruses to others.

However, choosing the perfect hand sanitizer can be quite overwhelming. There are different alcohol percentages, different formulas, different scents – there is too much choice. Since in the past I’ve felt this way, I’m sure I’m not alone, so I’ve decided to partner up with Ocean Free, hand sanitizer manufacturer to figure out how to choose the right hand sanitizer.

When choosing the right sanitizer, there are a few things to consider, including alcohol-percentage, consistency of the formula and then personal requirements, such as size and scents. According to a 2020 study, it’s also important “keep in mind that the efficacy of alcohol hand sanitizers is dependent upon the type of alcohol, the quantity applied, the technique used, and the consistency of use.”

Alcohol percentage matters.
As this article on the CDC website mentions, “many studies have found that sanitizers with an alcohol concentration between 60–95% are more effective at killing germs than those with a lower alcohol concentration or non-alcohol-based hand sanitizers.” So, it’s essential to look at the alcohol percentage of hand sanitizers before purchasing.

Liquid or gel.
Choosing the right hand sanitizer consistency has to do with your personal requirements. For spray bottles and spray dispensers, liquid hand sanitizer will be the best choice whilst hand sanitizer gel would be better suited for day-to-day, on-the-go usage.

Size and scent.
Both these options rely on your personal requirements and intended use. If you are looking for hand sanitizer to use when you are out and about which can be easily stored in your purse or backpack, travel-size hand sanitizer would be the answer. For large spaces, perhaps a work environment, larger bottles of hand sanitizer would be the best choice.

In terms of scent, there are plenty of different hand sanitizer scents available. Ocean Free alone has lemon zest hand sanitizer, aloe vera hand sanitizer and sea breeze hand sanitizer in a variety of sizes. For sensitive skin, Ocean Free recommends fragrance-free hand sanitizer.

What type of hand sanitizer do you use?
