Top Tips for Choosing the Right School for Your Child

Selecting a school for your youngster is a huge responsibility and should be carefully planned and researched. There are plenty of things that you’ll need to consider when choosing a school and you might need some tips to help, which is why I have teamed up with a junior school in Oxfordshire.

Firstly you’ll need to think about your family’s priorities. For instance, do you need a school that’s on route to your place of work so that you can drop your child off on the way? Do you require plenty of extra-curricular options and after-school care because you work long hours? Do you need a school that caters to international families? Think about what is important, not only to your child but to the rest of the family.

Once you’re abundantly clear on what you’re actually looking for in a school, you can start your search. Have a look online and gather as much information as you can from the websites of the schools in your desired areas. You should be able to find out things like the curriculum, the admissions process, general life at the school and the previous inspection reports. This should help you put together a shortlist of schools that are worth a visit.

During your visit to the school, consider whether it feels welcoming. Is it warm, safe and clean? Ask lots of questions, both of the teachers and of the current students, as they will be able to provide you with different perspectives. Think about whether or not your child might fit in there. You could even take them along and let them get a feel for the place.

It’s certainly worth asking your child’s opinion if you find yourself torn. They are the ones who will be spending most of their time there so it’s important that they like it.
