The Ultimate Boiler Maintenance Checklist

Boiler maintenance can be intimidating. It’s tempting to wait until something goes wrong before giving your boiler the attention it needs, but this can be costly, time-consuming and at worst, extremely dangerous.

Many assume they don’t have the knowledge to complete the required duties, and instead of taking the time to learn or hire a professional, abandon the job instead.

September Favourites - Back Into The Real World

Let's be honest here, this year has been a total wash out. For 6 month, we've stayed home, stayed safe, and spent many a day baking, eating, and sitting around complaining about Covid-19 and how we've not been able to do anything.

Now we seem to be coming out the other side, somewhat, I decided to write up my favourites post with a bit of an angle of items for going back into the real world. I mean, I don't know about you but I got so used to being at home, that I am not much prepared for going outdoors.

How to Raise an Optimistic Child

Why is optimism important? Is it something that can be learned? These questions are often asked when parents begin to consider what character traits their child might have as they grow up. Are you an optimist or not? You might be considering how your own outlook affects that of your child and at the core of this is a very natural desire for your child to be happy. One of the best ways to stay happy and balanced in life is to be optimistic, to have a cheerful disposition and the ability to remain positive in the face of life’s challenges. People who struggle to stay upbeat and hopeful are often the people who also struggle to feel happy and satisfied in their lives.

Helping Your Child Learn a New Language

If you’re interested in helping your child to learn a new language, then you probably know that the earlier you start, the more chance of success you will have. More than one language is a huge advantage in terms of a child’s future opportunities in both education and work. That’s without even considering the social benefits. This independent school in London believes that excellence is achieved in small increments and that’s how you should look at developing your child’s language skills. Small hurdles, one step at a time.

What Does it Take to Be An Effective School Leader?

When looking for a new school for your child, no matter their age, it is important to consider the leadership and their priorities. Do these priorities line up to your own? You may be wondering what it takes to be an effective leader, and therefore what it takes to help young people grow up to be successful, happy and healthy individuals. The Importance of Pastoral Care in Schools

Every school requires a pastoral care department to help maintain the community spirit and ensure every child is happy and reaching their full potential. It’s a complicated aspect of any school and shares many similarities with parenting, other than the fact that it involves taking care of hundreds of kids rather than just a few. As such, thorough policies and procedures must be in place to ensure the pastoral care is successful. Every school will have a unique approach, but the fundamental goals of pastoral carers are always the same; to ensure every child prospers, both academically and personally. I have teamed up with an independent school in Surrey to explore in further detail the importance of pastoral care.

Advice On Hiring Gardeners And Contractors

Whether your garden requires simple weeding or general cleanup, you've got to find the right gardener to help tidy your green space.

First, decide the exact kind of work that you want to do. Gardeners provide a wide range of services which typically depend on their levels of training and years of experience. While some gardeners specialise in general maintenance of existing garden designs, others focus on tree surgery, landscaping, or long-term planning.

Top Tips for Helping Your Kids with Maths

Some people are great with numbers, others are better with words, and some prefer hands-o activities like art or sport. Children who struggle with maths shouldn’t feel ashamed; it’s likely that they thrive in other areas of their education. However, maths cannot be avoided as it is one of the core subjects in the National Curriculum and students must study it until at least the end of their GCSEs. With that said, you may need to give your child a little helping hand when it comes to maths. Don’t worry, you don’t have to be a pro at maths yourself in order to help your child. An independent school in London have put together the following tips.

Ride On Bikes For Children Of All Ages

I'm sure you remember being younger and seeing a little child rolling down the path on a ride on car and being a little jealous that those of us that were older didn't have something similar. Wishing you could have a go but knowing you'd never get your legs back out from under the dash if you tried squeezing in.

We all grew up dreaming of being able to ride big buggies, like they do in American movies, and fly down dirt roads, but never actually being able to find anything like that in our area. I mean, when I was growing up, I never had the chance to ride a quad bike because there was nowhere that sold them.

Nowadays though, there is so much more choice for all ages of children. And so, here is a range of ones that would be ideal for little ones, right up to the teens...

The best family holiday destinations in 2020

After an eventful year, to say the least, many families will be keen to explore holiday destinations for this year and beyond. Deciding on travel items and essentials is hard if you don't know where you're off to. There are so many options to choose from, too.

A holiday is a vitally important activity for a family. Not only does a family holiday create memories, but it can help establish lasting relationships and enable various family members to bond. It can also be educational, allowing your children to experience a different culture and a way of life, therefore making them more aware of the world and the different types of people on our planet. The benefits are endless, not least for us parents too. With many prime holiday hotspots offering childcare and the option for parents to switch off fully, a holiday can be beneficial for everyone.

Getting Ready For High School With Treads Shoes

It's safe to say that this school year has been pretty much a wash out as most children have been home from March onward. For T, with this being his last year of primary school, it was made worse by the fact that he didn't get to see his school friends, his teachers and or school, for those last few months.

What's more, it also meant that he hasn't been ale to do transition days, visit his new school, or prepare much, in any way, for his start in high school. Luckily his high school have been great, offering videos and information on their website so that he could see a tour of his school, and know what he can and can't bring to school.

Why It's Important To Protect Your Family For The Future

When you have children, the importance of protecting them is paramount. You walk outdoors and hold their hand so they don't run near the road. You put parental controls online so they cannot see anything untoward. You give them lifts, and ring them every half hour when they get older, so you know they're okay. Us parents do everything we can to protect our children, and that doesn't stop in the future either.

One thought I had when I became a parent was, what would happen if anything was to happen to me, and I was no longer here to look after my child? And that's the time I looked into life insurance and realised just how important it can be, when it comes to having a family.

How To Throw An Afternoon Tea Party

As someone who has been out for afternoon tea quite a few times, I know just how appealing, delicate and tasty they are. The effort that goes in to making them, the flavours, and the work it takes, afternoon tea is such a lovely thing.

But at the moment, a lot of us still don't really want to go out all too much, and so, if you're missing those afternoon tea vibes, I thought I'd give you a guide to afternoon tea so that you can prep it at home and have your own afternoon tea party for you and your family.

Now there aren't any rules when it comes to the food on an afternoon tea, but a standard one comprises a tier of sandwiches, a tier of cakes and one of scones. However, at home, this can totally be geared more to what you love, so you could throw in pastries or biscuits, or even go for a different theme entirely.

Using Astronomy In Decor - A Desenio Prints Review

What compels you to view the night sky? The other night, I was out taking a night walk around the area we live. The world around me was at rest. In the distance, I could hear birds calling into the night. The air had that slightly cool, slightly moist feel that it gets at this time of year. It was quiet, and clear, you could see the into the sky for what looked like forever.

I adore stargazing. On the best nights, I find myself in a reflective mood, whether I've gone out to a field to experience the whole sky, or am just looking into the darkness from our garden. It's amazing to think all all that is out there in the sky, most that you cannot even see, but what you can see makes for the perfect scene.

Fashion Statement: Being Bold With What You Wear

Choosing to wear what you like rather than what is fashionable isn’t always an easy task. There is a lot of pressure for people to conform and play it safe with what they wear, with societies around the world having set trends that come in and out of popularity. Of course, though, not everyone wants to fit into the same category. You can express yourself through your clothing, creating art out of the things you wear, and giving people something new to look at in the process. To help you out with this, this article will be exploring some of the work that can go into being bold and making a statement with your style.

How To Prep A Room Before You Decorate

When it comes to decorating a home when you're living it, it's safe to say that it can be a bit of a pain. I mean, you have to find space for all the items that are usually in the room, sort it around everyone in the home, and decorate in stages to fit around everyone's schedules.

And whilst it's tempting to rush the task and simply paint over old wallpaper or start ripping up old floors, if you want a professional finish, you must include room prep, and this takes time, but gives the best results in the end, so is worth it.

How Much Value Does a New Bathroom Add to My House?

It's one of the key questions of any house purchase: "how many bathrooms?" The answer matters to prospective buyers, and as time has passed, one bathroom has gone from the norm to a relic of dated 20th century housing. As a result of this, additional bathrooms are now one of the most popular ways of adding value to a home. It may be popular, but that doesn't always mean it's a smart move. Fruity Desserts To Pair With Moscato Wine

If you've ever been to a dinner party, or just enjoyed a glass of wine when eating your evening meal, you'll know that some wines just don't suit desserts and that's why today I'm talking about Moscato wine and how it makes the perfect accompaniment to sweet foods.

That's because Moscato is a style of wine made from muscat grapes and is considered a sweeter wine. It generally has lower acidity, with a slight sweetness thanks to higher levels of residual sugar which means it makes a perfect pairing with desserts, hence it being given the title of a dessert wine.

The Muscat grape is one that provides a white wine, which is rich, very soft and light with floral and fruity aromas. Independent Wine have sent me a bottle of Siddùra Nùali Passito 2016 to give it a try and show how you can enjoy a bottle of Moscato wine, and how to pair it to bring out the right flavours of the bottle, and the food you're eating.

"Moscato di Sardegna is a Sardinian wine DOC made in the traditional Italian passito method. This technique is used to create sweet wines with incredibly intense flavours. Grapes are harvested early, when they are still full of fresh acid, and dried in the cellar. As the water evaporates, the sugar and flavours in the grapes become more concentrated. The fermentation process begins in winter. All of the sweetness in this wine is natural: there is so much sugar in the dried grapes that the yeast can’t convert it all into alcohol."

The wine is so beautiful, that is was awarded the very prestigious Decanter Gold Medal in 2019 as well as Berliner Wein Trophy 2019: Gold, Mundus Vini Spring Tasting 2019: Gold and Concours International De Lyon 2019: Gold.

This wine pairs perfectly with fruity desserts, I think, because of its intense flavours of mangos, pineapples, acacia honey, apricots, peaches, cooked pears and caramel. So I thought I'd list 3 fruity desserts which I personally think would match with this gorgeous lengthy bottle.

Carrot and Walnut Cake
Whatever the occasion, this carrot cake recipe is sure to impress and when mixed with walnuts, it brings a whole new flavour to the plate. With warming cinnamon, crunchy walnuts and velvety cream cheese frosting, it's a real winner. And even though it's not technically a fruit dessert, I think it works because of the mild and sweet flavours of the carrots, and the hit of warm cinnamon which cuts through the wine.

Apple Crumble and Custard
Apple desserts will always be a winner when served with a glass of Mostcato, and so it definitely had to be on my list. The emphasis on tartness here, the wine helps to build up the acidic notes in the fruit,  but a pairing with custard gives the sweetness of vanilla which works immensely well.

Lemon Meringue
It's a given that a tart flavour such as lemon will work well with Moscato, but this dessert is also ideal due to the creamy meringue topping and crunchy base. Moscato seems to flavour even better when paired with a dessert that has both sharp and sweet components, and a lemon meringue has both in spades.

What do you think? What dessert do you think makes the perfect pairing with Moscato wine?

Rats! - are there more, or are we just noticing them because of lockdown

There have been a number of news paper claims that we are seeing a rat population explosion in the UK since lockdown. But is this true and should we be worried for our families, our pets and ourselves?

In the News
We all know the newspapers love to make a small story into a big one and anything that isn’t directly about Covid-19 is always going to get some space at the moment but is there any truth behind it? The claims are fairly simple, they are suggesting the during lockdown rat and mice numbers are on the rise. This is because of a much higher number of sightings and pest control companies reporting a higher number of call outs.

Choosing The Right Backdrop For Photos

There are so many different types of backgrounds and then more and more choices once you start making decisions on type such as size, texture and colour, and it can be overwhelming, especially when you think about how you actually want your photo to look, and the aesthetics you are going for.

Take this bake, for example, I've used 3 different backgrounds throughout this post, and all give another dimension to the item being photographed. The grey gives a plain base and makes the subject stand out, the black marble gives moodiness to the design, and the red makes aspects of the photo pop with colour.

The outbreak of the coronavirus has taken the world by storm and changed daily life for almost everyone. Lockdown Style Doesn't Need To Be Boring

I think we all felt the same at the beginning of lockdown. A chance to stay at home, as we'd been told to by the government, and sit in our pyjamas all day whilst snacking and trying our best to work from home. But as someone who worked from home before lockdown, I can tell you that this doesn't work for too long.

Staying at home might sound like a blessing, but not making an effort for that long can cause us to be impaired mentally. Staying in your pyjamas gives you that excuse not to go out, not to need to do anything, and can mean you end up feeling rubbish.

5 Benefits Of Solid Wood Flooring

I've wrote about our home many times, talking about how some of the rooms in our home haven't been changed much since we moved in 10 years ago, and home improvement ideas. Renovating a home takes time, and although some rooms, such as the kitchen and bathrooms, might take longer, there are rooms that can be changed up with just some little added touches.

One past of the room that stands out the most though, and does need quite a lot of thought about it, is the flooring. Flooring can make or break a room, from looking too much with overused patterns, to wearing easily and looking damaged. But there's no getting away from the fact that solid wood flooring looks great and can be used all round the home. It is currently one of the most sought after flooring options and I can see why.

Now, this recipe is open to a bit of change up depending on what chocolate you prefer. I don't really like cooking chocolate so opt to use the regular stuff. In fact, I'm not even a dark chocolate lover, and neither are the kids, so I personally think a darker milk works quite well. In this recipe is use Galaxy Darker Milk, but you can use any you like - whether you prefer dark, milk or white, you can try any.

Bakewell Tart Recipe

If you haven't tried a proper Bakewell tart before, then you're in for a treat. This almond tart is a classic British dessert and a homemade one tastes totally different to a shop bought one. Made with a buttery pastry case, a thick layer of raspberry jam and then topped with a soft frangipane, before throwing over some sliced almonds to give a crunch at the top.

Bakewell tart is a moist textured dessert due to the frangipane filling which made with ground almonds. It can be quite hard to bake as, unlike regular cake filling, the frangipane filling will be soft and have a damp texture, more like set custard, so you can't do the skewer test to see if cooked.
