Guide To Private Number Plates

For many of us our cars are more than just a way to get around. Our cars are an extension of us; they are a treasured possession, they are something that gives us joy. We may even have somewhat of an emotional connection to our cars, and there is no shame in this.

We take care of our cars, we keep them clean and we give them treats, just like a private number plate.

But what are the costs associated with private number plates, how do they work and what do you need to know before you buy one for your car?

How much do they cost?
The thing about private number plates is that they do cost you money. When you compare this to the free number plate that comes with your car, you may wonder whether it is worthwhile investing in.

The thing about number plates is that they can cost anything from a few hundred pounds and even higher. It really does depend on how the number plate is made up and the numbers that it contains. If you take a look at some media stories for the sale of private number plates then you may find that some have gone for a rather astounding price, as much as hundreds of thousands of pounds in fact.

Is a private number plate worth it?
This really is a question that you have to ask yourself. Only you will know if you think that paying out for a personalised number plate is worthwhile for you. Of course, the main reason that many people choose them is because they are a fun way to personalise your car. However, they do have other benefits.

A private number plate is going to make your car much less likely to be stolen, in fact, it makes a car more identifiable, which is a bad thing for thieves. A private number plate should also be seen as an investment. You can buy it at a certain price, keep it for a few years and then sell on. You never know, you may be surprised by how much it can be worth when the time comes to selling it on.

You also don’t have to buy a personalised number plate for yourself, you could actually buy it as a gift for someone else. It really is completely unique and something that no-one else going to have bought them.

What about if I change car?
When you have paid out and invested in a private number plate, chances are that you are not going to want to pass it on when you buy a new car. The good news is that it is possible to take your number plate with you when you change your car.

That said, you do need to make sure that you take a look at the things that you need to do and also how much you can expect it to cost you.

It is relatively simple to move a number plate to another car, you just need to speak to the DVLA (which can be done online or post). You will also need to have all the appropriate documents and you will have to pay £80 in order to make the transfer.

It is great fun having a private number plate, so, why not figure out what you want yours to say and treat yourself? Best of all, you can even pay with finance over a period of time, which will help you to spread out the cost of buying a personalised number plate.

  1. Thanks for this post x

  2. I never considered giving a private number plate as a gift. Thanks for the idea.

  3. I saw my surname for sale in the 80's on a number plate, but it was £5,000 then! Way out of my price range....
