5 Bucket List Holidays Your Family Should Take

Whatever the age of your children, there is a world ready for the taking when it comes to booking your next holiday. Okay, you've looked at the travel agents brochure and the usually places are standing out to you, but there are so many beautiful places that you can take your family, that aren't advertised as much as those more commonly known jaunts.

I thought I'd put together a list of my top 5 bucket list holidays that I really want to take with my children. Those places that have so much to do and ways in which my children can see and experience other cultures, without it being commercialised for visitors.

Toronto, Canada
Toronto is buzzing with kid friendly activities, from cheap thrills to splashing out on a ticket to ascend the famous CN Tower and seeing dinosaur bones and Native Canadian headdresses at the Royal Ontario Museu. Chinatown and nearby Kensington Market are great for browsing and wandering to spend some time emerging into new cultures, and the Toronto Islands are only a ferry ride away, but a world apart from the city’s hustle and bustle. There are a few easy steps for car hire in Canada and with time on your hands, you can venture to the south  and visit the spectacular Niagara Falls or north to the rocky islets of Georgian Bay.

Maribor, Slovenia
Slovenia is a small but brilliant country, that no one one ever associate with family travelling. Rent a car and head north from the capital to Maribor, a small city that's packed full of active entertainment appropriate for all ages. There’s canoeing on the river Drava in summer and skiing in the nearby resort of Pohorje in winter so you can go all year round for family fun. In spring, you can even try the resort's  toboggan that hurtles down the ski slopes at up to 30mph to really give you that adrenaline rush.

San Ignacio, Belize
Belize is one of the safest and easiest Central American countries to explore with children, and Central America is one of the places that I dream of visiting with our children, one day. Its colourful marine life and beautiful beaches are a big draw, as well as the rainforest to provide tropical excitement. At Caves Branch Jungle Lodge near San Ignacio you can float down river in an inner tube through luxuriant forest full of spider monkeys, toucans, and listen to the chirping cicadas in the morning.

Tokyo, Japan
There are loads of kid friendly destinations in Japan, but you'll spoiled for choice in Tokyo. The Ghibli Museum and Odaiba are highlights, and the city also has plenty of parks and interactive museums to explore together and keep the children entertained throughout. Tokyo Disneyland is also nearby to really have a blast at, while Yokohama, Kamakura and NikkĊ  are all great places to visit on a day trip.

The Maldives, Indian Ocean
The Maldives might seem like a honeymoon destination, and lets face it, we've all dreamt of honeymooning there, but don’t be put off taking children there. Most resorts are child-friendly and you can also rent a hut on the beach so your children can spend hours playing in the white sand, jumping in waves and snorkelling in the shallow waters. Many islands have swimming pools and offer beach games, kayak hire, and dolphin-spotting trips too, with diving courses for older children. It really is an island perfect for water babies.
