My Wedding Guest Outfit & Accessories

We all have to walk a fine line when it comes to deciding what to wear to a wedding. You want to look striking, but still appropriate. You want to be remembered for the right reasons, without trying to upstage the bride. There are some basic ground rules worth thinking about before rushing to the big day - a few dressing dos and don'ts so that you can be the best dressed guest, with zero wardrobe stresses.

So whether you have a city wedding to attend, a religious ceremony to consider carefully or you just don't want to have a miffed bride on your hands, it's best to follow a few steps, to make sure you've got the best outfit for the situational wedding you're attending.

My husbands best friend gets married in a few month. It'll be the height of the Summer and so that needs to be thought about when it comes to choosing the right outfit for their nuptials. His wife-to-be and I are fairly close anyway so it means that I've been able to discuss my options with her, and she has done the same with me.

They're having a fairly casual wedding as both have previously been married and don't want the big affair this time around, so when it came to choosing my outfit, I didn't want to go overly formal wedding in style, as that's not what they're going for.

The Dress
White lace and cream embroidery are major no-nos when attending a wedding as a guest, as that's bride territory. But it's not only about respect for the bride, but it's also a lesser-known fact that longer hemlines are conservatively sexy whereas shorter dresses can look a little out of place at a wedding.

Lace is still the perfect choice for a wedding though, so I opted for a lace midi dress which I bought from Pretty Little Thing and is just the right length. Shows a little leg, but doesn't go over the knee to shoe too much. Burgundy in colour, this dress has a plunging neckline and a peekaboo detail under the bust to add a touch of sexiness to the outfit.

What Goes On Underneath
The dress may be the most important part of the outfit, but what's underneath it can really decide how the dress looks when on. You want underwear that compliments the colour of your dress, especially if it may be slightly on show with the straps. And then you might want to wear some shapewear to give your figure a little contouring.

I always go for good quality underwear, as you want it to be supportive, and a bit luxurious too. I've gone for Hunkemöller lingerie this time round as they have stunning colours, amazing support and so much beautiful designs to choose from.

Maidenform Shapewear

The Angie Padded Underwired Bra comes in a gorgeous dark red colour which coordinates perfectly with my dress and has matching Brazilian knickers in the same colour. Finished with subtle lace on the back of both the bra and knickers, this is slightly stretchy so gives a soft and comfortable fit. The bra is multi-functional too as it can change to an halterneck bra by adjusting the straps, which is great if you have a dress designed this way.

To add a little shape into the mix, the new Maidenform Firm Foundation Black Waist Nipping Briefs feature a sassy lacy take on your curve control. This shapewear is a combined shaping brief and waist nipper in one, providing 360 degrees of smoothing so you can flaunt your shape.

The modern flat lace panels provide feminine, smooth detail, and firm control with innovative fabric without added bulk. The cling-free and anti-static fabric lets the dress glide over easily and the boning help provide all round shaping and back smoothing to give the ideal shape to wear a dress over.

This Maidenform shapewear has a hook-and-eye front fastening for convenience although the material is so stretchy that it's easy to get on without even having to undo all of these. With the added ease of having a hook-and-eye gusset fastening so you don't have to try and dismantle your outfit to go to the bathroom. It has an RRP of £42 is available at JD Williams, Very.co.uk and Figleaves, coming in sizes S - 3XL.

The Accessories
Large tote bags and cumbersome shoulder bags don't ooze that special occasion vibe so it's best to go minimal, and head out to the wedding with a micro or clutch bag, carrying just those essentials you might need during the day.

The Josephine Clutch from Hotter is a  statement clutch that's made for getting noticed. The Josephine has three strap options or can be worn as a pretty clutch, so can really change to fit your outfit. The black bag has rose gold sequin details to the front, and matching chain strap to really give those rose gold vibes.

Going on from the rose gold theme, the Rose Gold Plated Wish Pendant from Newbridge Silverware may make this special day wishes come true. Simple yet unique, with a protective anti-tarnish layer, this beautiful pendant has a single black pearlized stone setting in the middle and looks perfect alongside the burgundy dress.

I paired this with the Rose Gold Plated Half Enamel Bangle which looks amazing and so elegant, and comes in a variety of colour designs, as well as black to coordinate with the pendant, and my outfit. This simply timeless enamel bangle is part of the Moonkoin range and would work wonderfully layered up with other pieces, although I think for a wedding it's best to tone it down with just one bangle.

And my piece of advice is to wear heels you can walk in all day. There's nothing worse than climbing into a pair of heels only to find that you are limping across the dance floor a mere few hours later. Find the comfy elevated shoes that will party harder than all your other footwear.

For me, I went with a pair of black platform heels that I had purchase previously from Matalan, which not only worked well with the burgundy dress and the black aspects of the accessories, but they are also super comfy to wear so that I know I can party into the night.

Feel Comfortable In Your Skin
Lastly, is what you wear on your skin. I prefer to look a little tanned when I'm at an event, so opt to do a little self-tan beforehand. I struggle with finding tans that are easy to apply though. That was until I found the Professional Hydrating Jelly Tan from Sunkissed. This unique jelly is has an over 95% natural formula with Hyaluronic Acid to help to plump and nourish your skin.

It is quick to apply, melting into the skin to leave it feeling silky smooth and soft with no tacky residue or streaks. I found it so easy to apply. Using the mitt, I simply used a couple of pumps at a time, slowly massaging it into the skin. Being wary around my knees and ankles, which I had already pre-moisturised, the jelly isn't greasy at all, and leaves the skin feeling silky smooth.

It's a gradual tan, so you don't go too dark overnight, but can use regularly to maintain a beautiful healthy glow. The photo above is after just one application, the night before, which gave me a healthy glow without being too dark. I much prefer it this way as it means that I can gage how often I need to top it up.

And that's pretty much it. I will be wearing make up to suit the look, such as the Doucee Relentless Matte Lip Crayon in Winterberry and matching STYLondon Eaton Square Eyeshadow Palette using the central right colour, which is highly pigmented and lasts all day. But other than that, my outfit is ready...

  7. I find it so difficult putting wedding outfits together, I can find everything I want to wear, but there's always one aspect that gets uncomfortable after a few hours, which is the biggest no no when, as you said, you've got to last all day and night!

  8. I like that the waist shaper fastens at the front, so much easier than one with no fastenings that you have to somehow wriggle into.
