The Priority Services Register | Making It Easier For Those We Love

Since meeting my husband, and subsequently being a part of his family, I have seen just how people with disabilities are sometimes treated differently, and not always for the better, when it comes to paying bills, and how they live. 

My mother-in-law has a range of complex needs which leave her unable to always leave her house, talk to people, and understand what she is being told. This can mean that she is sometimes left flustered when she has to ring utility companies about her bills, or for any other reason, especially when they won't allow other people to converse for her.
I can see the stress it brings her when another utility bill arrives at the door and she doesn’t know how to process what it’s saying, sometimes hiding them away in a drawer because she didn't want to deal with it. I talk to my mother-in-law a lot about how she lives independently and the support that is out there for people who need that extra bit of help. Sometimes, it’s hard to access, or find what help is available for you.  

That’s why the Priority Services Register was set up - to help those who need extra help, get just that. The Priority Services Register is a free service provided by Yorkshire Water (and other water companies) to provide a wide range of additional support to help make bills and meters more accessible. 

It’s a simple process to sign up to, you can do it online, and can help in many ways, one being the Nominated person scheme, which feels like a step in the right direction when it comes to being able to help my mother-in-law. It means that the account holder gives permission for someone of their choosing, to be able to ring up and speak to Yorkshire Water on their behalf, when they cannot do it.

Being signed up to the Priority Services Register would also benefit those who need bills in Braille, on an audio CD, or Large Print bills and documents as it can make all these options available. And if you are a customer who relies on a constant supply of water to your home, for example if you have a serious illness or disability, then you will receive a priority water supply connection where possible, or if needed, bottled water will be delivered straight to your door.

I think it’s so important to protect those in our families that need that additional help and that’s why I’m working with Yorkshire Water to show that there is this extra help, in the Priority Services Register, if you need it.
