Step One: Drop Down
This step entails dropping down from the high strength nicotine level to the next one down (usually medium strength). It is a good idea to stay on this for about 6-8 weeks before moving to the next level. However, try using your electronic cigarette a bit less in this step.

For instance, you could stop taking your e-cig with you when taking your kids to school. Your main aim should be training yourself to rely less on an electronic cigarette. At some point, you will stop using an e-cig completely so why don’t you start training yourself by using it less often?

Step Two: Scary-Low!

At this stage, you have already weaned away from the addiction to nicotine. You now need to wean away from the real addiction. Leaving your electronic cigarette at home on a regular basis will make it easier to leave using it completely once you have reached the zero nicotine stage, this will happen sooner than you think.

Step 3 is usually the shortest stage in the journey of using electronic cigarettes to quit smoking. You have done a lot of work to reach this stage and you only use the tiniest bit of nicotine in your electronic cigarette. Therefore, when you get to step four, things will not be scary despite the fact that you will be technically nicotine free.

Step Three: ZERO
At this stage, you need to drop from low nicotine to zero nicotine. In a few days, you will not have to deal with nicotine addiction anymore. You have come far and you should be proud of this. You are almost at the end of your journey to quit smoking.

Once you have dropped down to zero nicotine in your e-liquids and cartridges, you have almost finished the journey of quitting smoking. You may feel irritated for a few days since you are functioning on zero nicotine.

The act of puffing away on an electronic cigarette will give you a kind of placebo-effect since you will have learned to associate an e-cig with smoking. This means that the act will help you in a mental way in your “quit smoking” journey.

During this stage, you are no longer addicted to nicotine. After 3-4 days on zero nicotine, you will have done away with nicotine addiction. I would advise you to keep your electronic cigarette, with zero nicotine on standby in those places where it will not catch your eye to avoid relying on it when things go wrong.

Your main aim should be to start weaning yourself away from it. It is likely that you will be vulnerable to smoking situations and smokers for some time after kicking nicotine and electronic cigarette altogether.

Therefore, it may be a good idea to have an electronic cigarette with zero nicotine as a backup. Anytime you feel like smoking a cigarette, revert back to your e-cigarette with zero nicotine. Keep your e-cig safe somewhere in case this happens.

Many e-cig smokers I know have reverted back to smoking at one point or another. The major reason for this has been because they gave their e-cigs away to their friends or family members and had nothing to rely on in challenging situations.

I know of a guy who resorted back to smoking due to a car crash reason being he had taken the disposable e-cigarette out of the glove compartments the day before. So, avoid such a situation by having a zero nicotine e-cigarette with you everywhere you go to avoid resorting back to smoking.

  1. Totally agree - your mind has to be set - ive been on e cigs for a few years - gradually reducing nicotine levels - maybe next year I'LL be rid of nicotine forever
