5 Amazing Tips For Re-purposing Old Furniture

We all have pieces of furniture in our home that are probably past their best, but that you simply cannot bear throwing away. This could be a table that is looking worn and tired, or perhaps tub chairs that have more than just a few bare patches and are perhaps not as comfortable as they used to be.

Rather than having to resign yourself to the fact that you are going to have to chuck that prized piece of furniture away, there are lots of ways that you can re-purpose, mend and recreate old furniture into something new.

To give you some inspiration, we have put together 5 amazing tips for re-purposing old furniture that you can try out for yourself.

Transform a pallet or two
Do you have pallets in your garage or garden? If you do, then you can use this to create some rustic furniture in your home. Particularly storage boxes. You will need to give them a dust and a fresh lick of paint and in no time at all they will be looking fresh and new. Before choosing a paint, make sure to read some exterior wood paint reviews first. There are a number of uses for pallets in your home. You can transform them into a table, or perhaps stack them on top of each other to make a shelf like storage unit.

Old stools
Stools are often seen in homes that have desks, bars or even consoles in their kitchens. With so many bottoms sitting on them, over time, they are going to look tired and worn. If they are wooden then there is plenty that you can do to make them look new. Sometimes all they need is a sand down and a new coat of paint. However, if they are broken or uncomfortable you could always add a back using others pieces of wood, or perhaps attach a cushion to make them all the more comfortable to sit on for a period of time.

Turn a picture frame into a message board
We all like to keep photos of our family around our homes, but sometimes these can become outdated and, well, rather embarrassing. You might want to pop the photo into a cupboard or storage box, but that doesn’t mean that the photo frames are useless. Why not remove the backing and the glass and then attach the frame to a cork board? Cork boards are nice and cheap to pick up and you can attach the frames with ease, giving you a fun and unique message board that is not only ideal for your family, but also can be used as some sort of wall art too.

Kid’s furniture
Children’s furniture can make for a great restoration and reinvention project. Not only is it quite easy to re-design, often due to the light and neutral colours that it comes in, but as our children often outgrow things, as parents we can find ourselves spending out to replace them. Not only can you repaint or redecorate, using vinyl stickers, a piece of furniture to change it up, but you can completely redesign it and repurpose it too. One great idea that we have seen is to transform an old playpen into a playhouse. Cut the netting out on one side, which will create an entrance, you can then throw in a few cushions and a blanket or two, and you will have a cosy den that your little one is going to love.

Drawers
Do you have an old chest of drawers that you want to find a way to transform? Why not take out those drawers and make them into under the bed storage? After all, storage is something that we all need more of. You can attach caster wheels to the bottom of the drawer, which will make it all the easier to pull in and out. You can even paint it with a colourful coat of paint, which will reinvent it completely. You could use these drawers to store make-up, toiletries, jewellery, shoes or even kids toys if it is needed.

These are just some of the ideas of ways that you can reinvent furniture in your home. Making something that not only looks brand new, but that also doesn’t have to cost you the Earth.

Feeling up to the task after reading through our tips? It is important to realise that it isn’t always easy to reinvent old furniture, but with some knowhow, the right tools and a touch of creative flair, you can create something to be proud of.
