No More Couch Potatoes: Ideas For Encouraging Your Kids To Be More Active

I don’t know about your family, but in my house, it can sometimes be a struggle to get the kids away from the TV and their computer games. What is it with kids and technology - why do they love it so much?

As a parent, it can be worrying when your kids would rather spend time cooped up indoors rather than outside being active. As children ourselves, most of us spent our time building dens, playing outside and riding our bikes, but today's kids are growing up in a whole different world.

With that in mind, it’s important to make sure that we are encouraging our kids to spend more time outside and less time on the couch. The question is, what’s the best way to go about doing that? I’ve got some ideas - have a read and see what you think!

Teach them that being active can be fun

A lot of children prefer to spend their time inside playing video games or watching TV because they believe that it’s more fun. However, if you take some time to show your kids that playing outside can be fun, they’ll be more likely to play outside. Teach them how to build dens, design them a tree house, add a climbing frame to your back garden - get creative and find ways to make outdoor play more appealing.

Enrol them in a sports team or activity club
To encourage your children to spend more time being active, consider enrolling them in a sports team or activity club. Ask them what they would like to do and enroll them in that club or activity. Whether they want to join a local football team, start ballet dancing, or join the Scouts, it doesn’t matter, just as long as they’re doing something active and not sitting in front of the TV or their games console. If there isn’t a suitable sports team or club near where you live, consider starting one. Just think, you could coach your child and their friends to play a new sport, buy them trophies and awards from Premier Trophies to reward their hard work, and show them how much fun being active can be.

Lead by example

Kids learn a lot from what their parents do and how they act. So if you want to encourage your children to be more active, you need to be willing to lead by example. This means making an effort to spend time being active like you encourage them to do. It also means being willing to go for a kick about at the park with them when they ask or being willing to take them on a bike ride every so often. As a parent, you need to lead by example, as a lot of your children’s behaviours are learned from you.

So there you have it, all the best tips and advice for encouraging your kids to be more active. Be a parent who cares enough about their children’s health to constantly encourage them to be active, and also to lead by example. After all, everyone knows that kids copy what their parents do, so if you’re an active person, the chances are that they also will be.

  1. Some really good ideas here, and I think you're right. For people who are able to be active and enjoy being active, that must really increase the chances of the children picking up that attitude. Not possible for everyone, of course, but it's not an effect to be underestimated for those for whom it is.
